Tokoloshe

This blog post is dedicated to my very good friend Joey.

The Tokoloshe (or tikoloshe) hails from  Africa, mainly from Zulu regions of the country, it is a small dwarf like creature that ranges mischievous prankster of school children to wicked malevolent sprite.  In either case, he enjoys sour milk.  In many rural parts of Africa the Tokolosh is a very real fear of the local people to the point that many will not even speak of the tokoloshe for fear of making the spirit angry.

In many rural parts of Africa the Tokolosh is a very real fear of the local people to the point that many will not even speak of the tokoloshe for fear of making the spirit angry.  At best the Tokoloshe is a nuisance, causing animals to misbehave, making noises outside the house and eating all the food in the house (Anderson).  The Tokoloshe is said to be called upon by shamans, angry neighbors or sorcerors, usually for black magic.  It makes sense that the rural locals would be so frightened of the tokoloshe as he is reported to be as un-catchble  as the wind and "is also believed to beat children, to have intercourse with girls at night, and to strangle people while they sleep.  Some people still raise their beds from the ground in order to make it more difficult for the short Tokoloshe to climb onto them" (Anderson 125). A force to be reckoned  with is the Tokoloshe of South Africa!  Sometimes going to a healer will help solve the problems of the Tokoloshe but other than that it is best to just keep quiet and stay out of the way of this little spirit's wrath.  I think there may be more stories to be learned of the Tokoloshe...I shall keep an ear out and continue research...
